The holidays are over and now it’s time to move into subtle cheerful tones as opposed to the traditional seasonal color pallet we just enjoyed. Anyone else miss Christmas yet anxious for spring? It’s a tough spot to be in.
I love a baby shower, or any soiree for that matter, filled with DIY touches. A baby shower with soft colors and unique flair is my all time favorite! I’m currently planning a baby shower for a family member, and she requested soft neutral colors, which puts me in baby shower DIY heaven. I can’t wait to get to work on that early spring party! While we’re not ready for full on spring-themed decor just yet, creating decor that touches on both winter and spring is just the ticket.
Watercolor is the perfect way to add in soft tones and it’s gorgeous too! I created a DIY watercolor banner that you can easily recreate in less than an hour. Once I completed this banner I didn’t want to take it down; it’s pretty and looks like something you would purchase, not make yourself. Grab all the how-to details below.
- Watercolor paint
- Paint brush
- Glass of water
- White banner (this gold and white banner can be spotted in the party section of most large chain stores)
- Poster board or disposable mat
The how to:
Apply water to your paint brush and apply paint. Brush on the banner sections in any direction you like. I chose to paint watercolor streaks in a slanted manner with the color heavy in one corner. The key to watercolor painting is water. You’re painting with paint, yes, but water is the key. Continue to dip the paint brush in water and paint multiple times. Once you’ve started your color on the banner dip the brush back into water to “fade” the color out. Water, water, water and less paint. Allow the banner to dry (15-30 minutes), string the banner and hang.
I’m no water-coloring pro. Watercolor is fun and you can’t get it wrong. I took a local class on water-coloring basics and applied the key instructions to this DIY. No class is required to enjoy water-coloring! Enjoy painting a custom banner for the mom to be.
